- I’m an alpaca breeder with a small herd in Colorado. Besides loving the breeding side of the business, I love to work with the fiber — dyeing, spinning, and knitting. My husband and I moved to the country in 2003 and would probably shrivel up if ever forced to return to the suburbs. Along with the alpacas, I have a whippet and three cats. My cats, of course, were brought on to keep the pest population down but can be found most evenings snoozing on the furniture inside while the rodents run amok outside. My whippet is the only animal on the property who is not required to work for her upkeep. As my husband and erstwhile cheerleader of my business says: “This is a testing place, not a resting place.” There’s always something to do.
